Sackville Hill Senior Centre is celebrating 25 years of providing recreation programming for older adults in Hamilton. This centre was made possible by the generous contribution that Sackville Hill made to this community. Sackville Hill arrived to Canada at the age of 17 in 1883. During this time, Sackville worked hard and started a family. In 1907, Sackville opened his first cement builders’ supply business on Elgin Street. There are reports that identify that Sackville’s work and business contributed and supported Hamilton’s economy. Reports indicate that “his life was in the community, donating and helping others” (HHCA Construction Hall of Fame). Shortly before Sackville passed away in 1950, Sackville Hill formally presented 20 acres of land to the City of Hamilton. Sackville wished to provide a park for mountain residents, in addition a $75,000 financial contribution followed for the development and support of recreation facilities. In 1992, Sackville Hill Senior Centre opened and at that time was the largest Seniors Recreation Facility in Ontario. This centre continues to contribute to the health and well-being of seniors in our community.
In honour of this legacy, Sackville Hill Senior Centre is having a 25th Anniversary Gala that is open to the public to attend on Wednesday November 25th, 2017. Members of the Hill Family will be at this event to help us celebrate this milestone.
